چکیده

We demonstrate the generation of widely tunable two-color x-ray free-electron laser (FEL) pulses at SwissFEL. In a split-undulator configuration, each color is produced in different undulator section, and chicane between two sections allows for variable time separation up to 500 fs. show an unprecedented photon energy ratio colors about three (350 915 eV), with individual pulse having peak power few gigawatts duration down femtosecond level. Moreover, we reduction required length via optical klystron mechanism time-resolved diagnostics FEL utilizing same beam setup as generation. The unique combination pair offers opportunities study ultrafast x-ray-induced transfer relaxation processes physics, chemistry, biology.Received 21 February 2022Accepted 4 April 2022DOI:https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevResearch.4.L022025Published by American Physical Society under terms Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. Reflection of attosecond x-ray free electron laser pulses.

In order to utilize hard x-ray free electron lasers (XFEL's) when they are extended to attosecond pulse lengths, it is necessary to choose optical elements with minimal response time. Specular grazing-incidence optics made of low-Z materials are popular candidates for reflectors since they are likely to withstand x-ray damage and provide sufficiently large reflectivities. Using linear-optics re...

Photoelectron diffraction from laser-aligned molecules with X-ray free-electron laser pulses

We report on the measurement of deep inner-shell 2p X-ray photoelectron diffraction (XPD) patterns from laser-aligned I2 molecules using X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) pulses. The XPD patterns of the I2 molecules, aligned parallel to the polarization vector of the XFEL, were well matched with our theoretical calculations. Further, we propose a criterion for applying our molecular-structure-de...

Widely tunable two-colour seeded free-electron laser source for resonant-pump resonant-probe magnetic scattering.

The advent of free-electron laser (FEL) sources delivering two synchronized pulses of different wavelengths (or colours) has made available a whole range of novel pump-probe experiments. This communication describes a major step forward using a new configuration of the FERMI FEL-seeded source to deliver two pulses with different wavelengths, each tunable independently over a broad spectral rang...

Compression of X-ray Free Electron Laser Pulses to Attosecond Duration

State of the art X-ray Free Electron Laser facilities currently provide the brightest X-ray pulses available, typically with mJ energy and several hundred femtosecond duration. Here we present one- and two-dimensional Particle-in-Cell simulations, utilising the process of stimulated Raman amplification, showing that these pulses are compressed to a temporally coherent, sub-femtosecond pulse at ...

Explosions of xenon clusters in ultraintense femtosecond x-ray pulses from the LCLS free electron laser.

Explosions of large Xe clusters ( ~ 11,000) irradiated by femtosecond pulses of 850 eV x-ray photons focused to an intensity of up to 10(17) W/cm(2) from the Linac Coherent Light Source were investigated experimentally. Measurements of ion charge-state distributions and energy spectra exhibit strong evidence for the formation of a Xe nanoplasma in the intense x-ray pulse. This x-ray produced...
